Brazilian footballer Dani Alves is under investigation for alleged sexual assault in Barcelona last month, Catalonia’s top court confirmed on Tuesday.
“The investigating magistrate’s court number 15 of Barcelona has opened proceedings for the alleged crime of sexual harassment due to a complaint filed by a woman against a football player last December,” the court statement said. The alleged incidents took place in a nightclub in Barcelona.
“The case is under investigation and we have no further information at this time.”
A court spokeswoman confirmed Dani Alves’ allegations to CNN.
CNN reached out to Mexico’s UNAM, Alves’ current club, for comment on the team and player but did not immediately hear back. Alves denies any wrongdoing, per Reuters.
Alves is one of the most decorated footballers of his generation, having won domestic titles in Spain, Italy and France. He also won three Champions League titles with Barcelona.

Alves won the Copa America with Brazil in 2007 and 2019. At the age of 39, he appeared for the national team in Qatar when his team played Cameroon, becoming the oldest Brazilian player to appear at the World Cup at the age of 39.
