An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale hit the Nicobar Islands region at 5.07 am, the National Center for Seismology said on Monday.

Earthquake tremors were felt in two countries, India and Indonesia. The quake struck Perca, 208 km off the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, earthquake.usgs.gov said.

Three earthquakes in Uttarkashi

About 24 hours after the earthquake in Uttarkashi, there was an earthquake in Nokbar Island. A magnitude 5 earthquake rocked Uttarkashi in the early hours of Sunday after two consecutive aftershocks.

District Disaster Management Officer Devendra Patwal said on Sunday that the epicenter of the first earthquake at 12.45 am was in Siror forest of Bhatwari area of ​​the district.

Two more earthquakes followed soon after but were too weak to be recorded locally, he said.

Patwal said many residents were awakened by the tremors as kitchen utensils fell to the ground and windows and doors rattled, forcing them to flee their homes in panic.

They said that they spent almost the whole night outside their houses in fear.

However, there were no reports of loss of life or property anywhere in the district, Patwal said.
