The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment is conducting a series of awareness programs across the state from March 1 to 8 to sensitize women about sensitive issues like domestic violence, drug abuse and workplace harassment.
Congratulating on Women’s Day on March 8, Sukhu said today women are contributing equally to the progress of the state along with their male counterparts and need to be supported.
He said, “Women have contributed tremendously in shaping society and civilizations can progress only when women are treated equally with men and given due respect.”
He said that Congress-led governments have always been sincere towards “women power”.
The Chief Minister said that during his tenure as Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi had paved the way for 33 per cent reservation for women in panchayats and local bodies through the 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments.
Although opposed by many, Gandhi was determined to empower women and increase their participation in nation building.
