The RSS on Tuesday echoed the Centre’s stand on same-sex marriage and said marriages can only take place between persons of the opposite sex. In view of the uproar over Rahul Gandhi’s comments in London, Dattatreya Hosable of RSS also said that as a leader of a political party, he should speak more responsibly and face the reality.

Dattatreya Hosable was addressing the media at the annual meeting of the RSS, which was attended by more than 1,400 office-bearers, including its chief Mohan Bhagwat.

The Supreme Court on Monday referred the petitions seeking legal recognition of same-sex marriages to a five-judge constitution bench for decision, saying it was a “very serious issue”. The Center has opposed a batch of petitions seeking legal validation of same-sex marriages in the apex court, claiming they would wreak “complete havoc” with the delicate balance of personal laws and accepted social values.

In response to questions on Gandhi’s comment in Britain, the Sangh leader said, ‘Those who converted India into a prison have no right to comment on democracy in the country. On the question of Sangh’s outreach to Muslims, Hosable said that Sangh leaders are meeting Muslim intellectuals and their spiritual leaders only on their invitation.
